Ash canker bowl.
Caused by a bacterial infection in the living timber, which is killed-off by the seasoning process. The skill in creating the perfect canker pot lies in drying the timber at precisely the right time, to avoid there being too much weakness in the timber for it to be worked. The process of turning the timber is a slow and painstaking one, as the timber is in a delicate state when revolving at speed!
